While modern medicine is a standard privilege for most Americans, in many countries access to basic care is extremely limited, such as in Honduras, where individuals may wait days or even weeks to get the medical care they need. For over a decade Holy Family Surgery Center and One World Surgery have provided solutions through its volunteer program that offers medical, surgical, dental, and vision care in regions of Honduras that would not otherwise have these available.
Cary Orthopaedics physician Brian Szura, M.D. and CEO Mike Mazzella, PT recently took part in this program and spent a week in Honduras volunteering their time offering surgical and therapy services. Although this was not Dr. Szura’s first trip, both said they felt honored to be a part of the mission this year to serve this population in such need of medical care. They described cases in which individuals had waited weeks following an injury before being seen by a medical professional, often injured while working to provide for their families. Both felt their experience was inspiring and they would like to return in the future. Thank you Dr. Szura and Mike for offering your generosity and time to such an important mission!
