Lt Col (ret) Casey Sabbag MD, MS is a board certified, fellowship trained Orthopaedic surgeon that specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery with an additional board certification in the subspecialty of Hand Surgery. She joined Cary Orthopaedics after her retirement from the U.S. Air Force.
Dr. Sabbag grew up in Cary, NC, and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. She subsequently completed her master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, prior to starting medical school at University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL, under the Health Professional Scholarship through the U.S. Air Force. She completed her Orthopaedic residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC. Following completion of her training, she began her active-duty service and Orthopaedic Upper Extremity practice at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, TX.
During her time at BAMC, Dr. Sabbag served in many leadership roles including military leadership and academic Orthopaedics. She was the director of the Intern Skills Program from the residency program from 2020–2022; a Flight Commander for the Air Force Orthopaedics from 2022–2023; and the Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery from 2023–2025. She performed many tours of duty to military treatment facilities in the continental U.S. and a combat deployment in Al Udeid Air Force Base in Qatar in 2024. During her deployment, she served as the sole Air Force Orthopedic surgeon for the entire Central Command (CENTCOM) and performed surgery and coordinated care and medical evacuation for many injured servicemembers.
Dr. Sabbag served as the director of the RESTOR-FUSE translational military research lab from 2021–2026, acquiring multiple federally funded grants and served as the principal investigator for 22 basic and translational science research projects and 4 human clinical trials. During this time, she was also the founding Vice President of the Texas Hand Society and chaired its inaugural meeting in 2026. She was recognized at the Henry Jackson Foundation Heroes in Military Medicine Award in 2023, and in 2024 was awarded the Military Health System Female Physician Leadership Award, LTC Mazurek Clinician Scholar Research Award, and Physician of the Year from the 959th Medical Squadron, and Field Grade office of the year from the 959th Medical Squadron in 2025.
Dr. Sabbag is an active member in the leadership of American Society for Surgery of the Hand, serving on the Military Relations Committee and the Program Committee for the last 6 years. In 2026, she was elected to the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association. She has authored 9 book chapters, 40 peer reviewed publications and has presented research at over 100 regional, national and international meetings. Her clinical interests include upper extremity trauma, distal limb optimization in the care of upper extremity amputees, peripheral nerve surgery.
She is married to Orlando Sabbag, MD, who is also an Orthopedic Sports Surgeon. They have two children. Outside of the OR, she loves spending time with her family, camping, hiking, running, yoga and all forms of exercise.
