TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT

Experts in Joint Replacement Surgery

Cary Orthopaedics offers total joint replacement surgery to replace painful hip, knee or shoulder joints damaged by injury, deformity or degenerative diseases such as arthritis. The goal of our partial and total joint replacement procedures is to restore mobility and quality of life for our patients. Providing years of reliable results, joint replacement also offers additional benefits such as pain-free sleep and increased ability to perform activities of daily living and light exercises without pain.

Joint replacement surgery replaces the worn-out arthritic joint surfaces with artificial joint surfaces that do not sense pressure or pain. Total joint replacement is an elective procedure and should only be performed when you are no longer able to deal with your pain and disability. If your physician has diagnosed you with advanced arthritic changes as demonstrated on x-ray, combined with pain and stiffness in the joint, this surgery may be a good fit for you.

With decades of experience, our joint replacement surgeons are experts who perform hundreds of these procedures each year.

Joint Replacement Recovery

The normal course of healing, rehabilitation and recovery can take between 6-12 months, depending on multiple factors such as age, tissue health, scope of the procedure performed and generally how your body responds to the rehabilitation process.

In most cases, pain relief is excellent, and range of motion returns to functional levels. You should be able to return to light activities such as bowling and golf, even breaststroke swimming. Avoid overhead stroke with swimming, contact sports, repetitive overhead heavy lifting as these types of activity increase the likelihood of your prosthesis loosening.

Considering Surgery

Prior to surgery, you will be asked to attend a pre-operative Total Joint Class at the Cary Orthopaedics main office. At this class, the following will be reviewed:

  • Nature of your specific condition
  • Nature of the surgical procedure
  • Normal post-operative course
  • Do’s and Don’ts before and after surgery

While attending the Total Joint Class, we encourage you to use this opportunity to ask any questions you may have regarding your surgery.

Shortly before surgery, you will be required to undergo special tests to ensure that you are medically ready and able to undergo the procedure. These tests will be conducted at the hospital facility at which you will be undergoing surgery.

Since this is considered major orthopaedic surgery and performed due to a seriously progressive arthritic and degenerative condition, your Cary Orthopaedic doctor will carefully explain the joint replacement procedure and help you understand the benefits versus the risks involved.

Total Knee Replacement in Raleigh, Cary, Holly Springs & Morrisville

The joint replacement surgeons at Cary Ortho will work with you prior to a knee replacement to utilize all non-surgical treatments before deciding if a total knee replacement is the right medical option for you.
