Cary Orthopaedics now offers patients new technology to restore strength, motion and balance without pain. The AlterG® VIA Anti-Gravity Treadmill reduces the body weight a patient feels on their lower body by up to 80 percent, allowing them to move freely.

What is an anti-gravity treadmill?

The revolutionary AlterG VIA Anti-Gravity Treadmill uses NASA’s patented Differential Air Pressure technology to fill a chamber around the patient with air. The chamber provides an unrestricted environment that reduces the patient’s body weight on their lower extremities. This technology helps patients safely regain mobility.

How does it work?

The antigravity treadmill allows physical therapists to precisely adjust a pressurized air chamber for each patient’s needs. The air pressure selected decreases the body weight on a patient’s lower body – down to one percent increments. This type of physical therapy reduces the strain on healing tissues and stress-related injuries. It also protects them while helping muscles grow stronger and gain endurance.

The treadmill provides real-time gait analysis and video biofeedback. This helps therapists improve patients’ walking patterns. They can quickly identify issues and stop harmful habits from forming.

Who can benefit from the anti-gravity treadmill?

Patients of all ages can benefit from treatment with Cary Ortho’s anti-gravity treadmill. People with ankle, knee, hip and lower back injuries have experienced positive outcomes from a treatment plan utilizing this technology.

More than 75 percent of runners experience an injury. Many runners and athletes, including Olympic and professional athletes, have used the anti-gravity treadmill to rehabilitate and improve athletic performance.

Patients with balance issues or deconditioning following a significant illness can also benefit. This “weightless” technology helps patients improve their gait, balance, muscle tone and independence to regain quality of life.

What are the benefits?

  • Unrestricted and pain-free movement

The pressurized air chamber relieves up to 80 percent of a patient’s body weight, allowing patients to rehabilitate without pain. The unique technology allows for the most normal gait and balance without harnesses or hydrotherapy.

  • Restore and build muscle strength, range of motion and balance

The unweighting technology offered by the anti-gravity treadmill removes traditional limits of weight and gravity. This helps patients safely start rehabilitation sooner.

  • Earlier rehabilitation

Patients of all types are able to begin safely rehabilitating after an injury or surgery. Athletes can maintain their conditioning and return to their sport sooner than before.

  • Helps a broad range of patients and conditions

The anti-gravity treadmill is a versatile technology that allows therapists to treat individuals of all ages and with a wide range of conditions.

  • Removes the risk of falling

Patients with weak muscles or joints can safely and comfortably rehabilitate without fear of falling or re-injury.

Where can I receive treatment on the anti-gravity treadmill?
