Cary Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Specialists first opened for business in August of 1982 by Dr. Ronald A. Epner as Cary Orthopaedic and Hand Center. Dr. Epner was in solo practice and had the only orthopaedic clinic in Cary. In 1985 Dr. Douglas L. Gollehon joined with Dr. Epner and brought with him an interest and expertise in Sports Medicine. When Dr. Gollehon and Dr. Epner incorporated, the name was changed to Cary Orthopaedic Center. The practice continued to grow and more emphasis was put into sports medicine. The group expanded to three orthopaedic physicians with the addition of Dr. Brian Szura in 1992.
The orthopaedic surgeons began working closely with Cary Sports Therapy and developed an extremely good relationship with many of the high schools, colleges and universities in the area. Over the years, Cary Orthopaedics has also been involved with many semi-pro and pro teams in the Triangle. When the World League had a football team in Raleigh, Dr. Gollehon traveled to many parts of the globe as their team physician. Since that time Dr. Szura has become involved with the Raleigh Capital Express semi-pro soccer team and the Carolina Courage Women’s professional team. In 1993 Dr. Douglas J. Martini joined the practice and added, yet another, well-trained sports medicine physician. He was the Team Physician for the Carolina Hurricanes NHL Hockey Team for several years from 2003 to 2006 when they won the Stanley Cup. In 1996 Dr. Andersen became a member of the team, also having a fellowship in sports medicine; he was the team physician for the female semi-pro soccer team, The Raleigh Wings during the time they were in Raleigh as well as the men’s pro team the Carolina Railhawks until 2009. Dr. Epner retired from the Practice in 1998 and Dr. Derek Reinke, a Sports Medicine Fellow from Cincinnati Sports Medicine Center, joined in September of 1999. Two years later in 2001 Dr. Mark A. Curzan followed, coming to us from a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Steadman-Hawkins in Vail, Colorado.
On November 1, 2002 Cary Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Specialists, P.A. opened its own physical therapy division called Performance Physical Therapy, treating patients with sports injuries, spinal injuries and more. Our in-house physical therapy staff is dedicated to the patient’s total recovery and provides individualized care under the supervision of our physicians. We are now happy to provide this service at all our locations.
As of November 2004 we added a Physiatrist, Scott S. Sanitate, M.D. a Specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, to offer our patients treatment for the back and neck as well as acupuncture and pain management. In January of 2006 Raymond M. Carroll, M.D. joined the practice as an orthopaedic surgeon with a fellowship in shoulder and upper extremities from the Center for Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Medicine in New York. He comes to us from Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.
In December of 2006 Cary Orthopaedic Spine Specialists opened next door to our Cary Orthopaedic location. This center treats back and neck patients with non-interventional pain management as well as interventional pain management and surgical orthopaedic care. Dr. Sanitate moved to this location and was joined by, Gary L. Smoot, M.D. who is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Chris Lin, M.D. who has a fellowship in Spine Medicine both are interventional physiatrists. We started as a nonsurgical spine center but in 2008 we added a spine surgeon, Sameer Mathur, M.D. to be able to offer the complete package for total spine care to our patients. Nicole P. Bullock, M.D. and Paul G. Singh, M.D. joined the spine center a couple of years later and are also interventional physiatrists, board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. We also have a dedicated Performance Physical Therapy Back Care rehab facility located in this space.
In September of 2009 we added another sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon, Edouard F. Armour, M.D. Dr. Armour practiced at Kernodle Clinic in nearby Burlington, NC and was the team physician for Elon College. 2013 was a big year for Cary Orthopaedic. Two new surgeons joined the practice. Demetri M. Economedes, D.O., started in September. He did his Fellowship at Rush Institute in Chicago and specializes in total joint replacement of the hip and knee. In the middle of October Nael Shanti, M.D., relocated from Cincinnati, OH and joined Dr. Mathur in the spine center as our 2nd orthopaedic spine surgeon. We also started our Work Conditioning Program as a part of our Performance Physical Therapy division.
